Your Consult: What to Expect

A formal consultation with Dr Drielsma is an essential initial step before any surgical procedure can be organised.

You may be referred to see Dr Drielsma from your GP or other doctor. Please bring your referral if you have one along with any relevant X-rays or test results if you have them. A referral is not necessary to see Dr Drielsma.

At consultation, a thorough history of your medical health and background will be obtained, eg past health, medications and operations. A clear understanding of what you are hoping to achieve and your expectations from surgery will then be discussed. A careful physical examination will also be undertaken to assess your clinical situation and suitability for surgery.

An accurate explanation will be given to you regarding your suitability for surgery and the steps involved. You will be taken through a detailed explanation of the benefits as well as possible risks and complications of surgery. It is important to understand such an explanation is not meant to scare or alarm you but is essential and it is Dr Drielsma’s duty to you. Be very wary of any practitioner who has not mentioned similar risks and complications of surgery.

Following your consultation you will feel that you have a good understanding of the procedure and its likely benefits and outcome along with its possible risks. This will enable you to make an informed decision as to whether you would like to proceed.

A detailed estimate of costs will be prepared for you following consultation and can usually be given to you on the day.
