Losing a lot of weight is honestly one of the hardest things you can do. The dedication it takes is incredible. But sometimes after all that work, you’re left with loose skin that hides the new body you fought so hard for. That’s where body lift surgery comes in – it’s basically the finishing touch that removes extra skin and fat while tightening everything up underneath.

Dr Robert Drielsma has been helping people through this exact situation for years. He gets that it’s not just about the physical stuff – there’s a whole emotional side to it too. The thing is, every person needs something different. What works for one patient might not be right for another. Let me walk you through the different types of body lift surgery so you can get a better idea of what might work for you.

What is Body Lift Surgery?

Here’s something important to understand upfront – this isn’t about losing weight. You should already be at or pretty close to your goal weight before considering this. Body lift surgery is all about contouring and shaping. The main goals are to:

  • Get rid of sagging skin and those stubborn fat pockets that just won’t budge
  • Tighten up the muscles and tissues underneath
  • Make everything look smoother and more toned

I think most people are surprised by how much this can change how clothes fit. Plus, there’s usually a huge confidence boost that comes with it.

Lower Body Lift

This is probably the most common type, and for good reason. It tackles your entire lower half in one go, which makes a lot of sense if that’s where most of your loose skin is.

  • What it covers: You’re looking at a tummy tuck for the belly area, lifting the outer thighs, and reshaping your buttocks and hips all at once.
  • Who’s a good fit: If you’ve had bariatric surgery or lost a massive amount of weight, you probably know about that “apron” of skin around your stomach. This procedure is often perfect for people dealing with that, plus sagging around the hips and thighs.

Upper Body Lift

Loose skin on your arms and back can be just as frustrating as anywhere else. It affects what you can wear and how comfortable you feel in your own skin.

  • What gets addressed: We’re talking about your upper arms (getting rid of those “bat wings”), lifting sagging breasts, and dealing with back rolls that show above and below your bra line.
  • Best candidates: People with significant looseness across their chest, back, and arms usually see amazing results. Dr Drielsma typically combines a few different procedures to make sure everything looks balanced and natural.

Belt Lipectomy

This one’s pretty intense – it’s also called a circumferential body lift. Picture an incision that goes all the way around your body, kind of like a belt.

  • How it’s different: While a lower body lift hits the front, sides, and back, this approach goes all the way around. You can remove the maximum amount of excess skin from your abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, and buttocks all in one surgery.
  • Who should consider it: This is reserved for people with really significant skin issues all around their midsection. The results can be life-changing – we’re talking about a dramatically different waistline, flatter stomach, and lifted, shapelier buttocks and thighs.

Comprehensive Body Lift

Sometimes the loose skin is everywhere, and that calls for a total-body approach. This combines upper and lower body procedures for a complete transformation.

  • What’s involved: Arms, breasts, back, abdomen, lower body – basically everything gets addressed. Because it’s so extensive, Dr Drielsma almost always recommends splitting this into separate surgeries. Safety comes first, and your recovery will be much more manageable this way.
  • Things to think about: This is a big commitment and requires serious planning. But for the right person, the results are incredible. You’re talking about a complete transformation that really shows off all the hard work you put into losing weight.

Picking What’s Right for You

Choosing body lift surgery is really personal. I think the decision depends on a bunch of different things:

  • Where you have the most loose skin
  • How good your remaining skin quality is
  • What you’re hoping to achieve
  • Your overall health

You definitely shouldn’t try to figure this out on your own. Having a specialist surgeon with real experience makes all the difference in getting results that look natural and beautiful.

During a consultation with Dr Drielsma, you can talk through everything that’s bothering you. He’s been doing post-weight loss surgery for decades, so he probably understands exactly what you’re going through. He’ll take a close look at your situation and work with you to create a plan that matches what you’re hoping for while keeping everything safe and realistic.

If you’re ready to finish this transformation journey you started, I’d suggest scheduling a consultation with Dr Drielsma. It might just be the final step you need to feel completely comfortable in your new body.

Rhinoplasty is an operation designed to change the appearance and/or improve the function of your nose.

There are several components to your nasal shape that you may wish altered in some way. These include the profile from the side view, the length or width, or the shape of the tip and the nostril openings.

This 60 year woman had breast implants inserted 30 years ago. She developed early capsular contracture which had worsened over the years.

She presented to Dr Drielsma with advanced scarring and distortion of her breasts.

Dr Drielsma performed a reconstructive removal of her implants with en-bloc total capsulectomies, revision of her sub glandular Impact pockets, and implant replacement using full profile anatomical gel devices.
